The North Sea or Baltic Sea – when you are camping in Denmark, you are almost always close to the sea. Yes that is why camping in Denmark has so much to do with freedom. The wind in your hair, the salty sea air on your lips, the smell of the harsh nature in your nose – wonderful feelings that contribute to Denmark being quite underrated as a camping destination. That being said, the country is a real insider tip, especially for families.

1. Henne Strand Camping & Resort

Henne

Beach, dunes, and forests – the Henne Strand Camping & Resort is a treat for the soul. Thus, it makes sense that the operators have made enjoyment the ultimate goal for campers who come here. Here, you can enjoy a lot, from nature and the fine food to the adventure pool, the spa area, and the training and fitness options. 2. Hvalpsund Familie Camping

Farsø

The concept of family camping is taken very literally at Hvalpsund Familie Camping, which even named the site after it. The name may also be based on the fact that the place is run by a family and that all family members work here. Their hospitality is truly second to none. Hvalpsund Familie Camping is a place where you feel right at home from the first minute, and where you make friends that last beyond the camping holiday.

Hvalpsund Familie Camping is a site that is surrounded by, and located on, meadows. You can park your camper in over 250 different pitches with a view of the sea. You can choose whether you want more of a secluded spot or if you prefer to be closer to the service buildings. These house toilets, showers, and laundry rooms. The place also has a large kitchen and a lounge with a television. If you do not want to cook for yourself, you can eat at Café Himmelblå, where you can enjoy the delicious burgers or pizzas in the café itself or in the pavilion with a view of the pool. You can of course also order take-away, to bring the delicacies with you to your camper. In high season, there is freshly baked bread in the café every morning, which is recommended to order the day before.

One of the highlights of the campsite, especially considering that indoor pools are more common up here in the north, is that there is an outdoor pool area in the cozy courtyard. It is, however, only open in the summer months. Here, you will find a children’s pool, a larger pool, a jacuzzi part, and a water slide. If you want to get closer to nature, but still be in the water, you should visit the beautiful beach. Here, you can collect shells, build sand castles, or go crabbing. You may also go kayaking or on a SUP tour on calm days and kite or windsurfing on windy days. It might be good to note that weather conditions and tides cause the beach width to vary greatly. Finally, the breathtaking sunsets are always worth seeing. And with a bit of luck, you can spot seals.

Excursion tips:

The Limfjord is full of fish – especially sea trout. The Hvalpsund Familie Camping is a certified accommodation for anglers, which means that you are in the best place if you also want to grab a rod. To fish in Denmark, you need a fishing license, which you can purchase at fisketegn.dk or you can contact the reception. The staff here will also gladly guide you to the best fishing spots, as well as other nice excursion tips for you and your children.

SpecialtiesVery close to the nice capital Copenhagen

Vacationing in Copenhagen doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive. A great, if not even better, alternative to the usual city trip is of course to travel in a camper. At Køge & Vallø City Camping you are sure to find the right place for you – no matter how big your camper is. When booking online, you can simply select your spot on the overview map, and you can feel comfortable in all pitches having an electricity connection. In the service buildings, you will also find everything you need, such as toilets, showers, fresh and wastewater access, a laundry room, a lounge and TV room, a large kitchen with an oven and gas stove, and even a workstation for gutting fish. There is a small shop at reception where you can get the essentials. The operators also attach great importance to environmental protection. For example, all buildings are powered by renewable energy in the form of solar energy or geothermal energy.

Additionally, Køge & Vallø Camping offers a number of leisure activities for the whole family. An 18-hole mini golf course, a boules pitch, a football pitch, table tennis, a playground with a bouncy castle, and a large outdoor chess game ensure fun hours with the family. A special highlight for children is the goats, which can not only be petted but also fed.

Excursion tips:

Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, is a great destination for family vacations. With a ride on the sightseeing bus you can get a good initial overview. A trip with the harbor buses is also recommended. The yellow ferries zigzag through the harbor and take you from the Royal Library via the idyllic districts of Christianshavn and Nyhavn, past the opera to the Little Mermaid. As a family, you should not miss Tivoli Park. Since 1843, the amusement park in the middle of the city has thrilled not both children and adults.

The small island belongs to Denmark and lies in the Baltic Sea between Poland and Sweden, east of Denmark. Bornholm is ideal for a camping holiday. Here, you will be met by 141 kilometers of coastline with white sandy beaches, magnificent rock formations, and authentic coastal villages. Sounds like a dream, huh? Sannes Familiecamping is a 5-star campsite – and the only campsite on the island of Bornholm. The campsite is run in a very personal way and the staff is fully committed to the well-being of their guests. You can either park your camper a little further up the hill or almost directly on the beach. All pitches have electricity and water connections, and a separate water drain can be booked. The ultra-modern and heated service building has a communal kitchen, laundry room, and toilets and showers. There is also a separate family room.

Your children will have a lot of fun here. In the water park of the campsite, you can spend hours on the various slides and pools. The best part? Mom and dad can relax on the loungers – or even better: enjoy a treatment in the wellness center with a view of the sea if the children are old enough. There is even more action for the children: mini golf, soccer field, bouncy pillow, playground, and the cool Monkey Tonkey Land for the little ones. The beach is also perfect for splashing around. On the site itself, there is a rocky beach that flows into a wonderful bay with a sandy beach.

Excursions tips:

Vacationing on Bornholm means being active, especially in nature. A popular activity, for example, is going on a forest walk in the Døndalen Valley. Here, beautiful nature, steep cliffs, and the highest waterfall in Denmark (22 meters) are waiting for you. If you like even more adventure, Nature Park Bornholm offers high rope climbing. Here, you can climb between the treetops on various paths. Still not enough? At Opalsee you can take the cable car from the top of the cliff down to the lake – not for the faint-hearted!

Skagen Sydstrand Camping is perfect for families. Here, there is a huge playground, a large sandy beach, three playgrounds, and the campsite’s own mini golf course. That being said, your children will be more than busy. These activities may very well be combined with experiencing the wonderful landscape of Northern Jutland.

SpecialtiesThree playgrounds

The motto of Skagen Sydstrand Camping is “Camp more, work less”. If you are here on this site in North Jutland, then this is not difficult at all. The campsite is located on the Kattegat coast, just 14 kilometers from Skagen. The site not only offers you direct access to the forest, but also to the wonderful beach. You can park your camper on one of the countless spots. Electricity connections are accessible and you have free access to the three sanitary buildings, which were renovated in 2021. There are also communal kitchens, and you can shop for essentials at the small shop at Skagen Sydstrand Camping, which also sells fresh bread rolls in the morning.

Family-friendliness is not just important here, but of highest priority. The fact that you can find three playgrounds here speaks for itself. Climbing frames and nets, swings, tunnels, balancing equipment, bouncy castles… the children can really let off steam here. Small cars to be used on the campsite can also be rented here. If that’s not enough, you can challenge the family on the mini golf course. What you definitely shouldn’t miss after all the action is cooling off at the beach, which is simply amazing. Sand as far as the eye can see and shallow water, means family-friendliness on top.

Excursion tips:

With Skagen Sydstrand Camping as a starting point, taking a trip to Skagen is recommended. Denmark’s northernmost city became world famous thanks to an artist collective. What else makes this fishing village so special? Above all, it is the very special lighting conditions. The light reflects in the two seas that meet here and it is as if it is brighter in Skagen than anywhere else. You have to see it in person to fully grasp what I mean. Here, there are also a lot of interesting sights, such as the old lighthouse Vippefyret, the art museum, the yellow Skagen houses, and the sand church, of which only the tower remains.

The church was built towards the end of the 13th century. In 1805, parts of it were demolished due to heavy silting, and it was only the tower that was kept. Copyright: Amanda Madsen, Unsplash.com

6. Camp Hverringe

Dalby / Kerteminde

The island of Fyn is located in the middle of the Danish Baltic Sea and you can reach it via the bridge Great Belt. On the eastern parts of the island, also known as “the green garden”, you will find Camp Hverringe. Here, you will camp in the middle of green and wild nature and is truly appreciated by families, especially those that are looking for outdoor adventures.

SpecialtiesPonies and goats at the campsite

Camp Hverringe has different types of pitches – you can find a detailed overview on the website of the campsite. An insider tip is to pay extra attention to the pitches that offer particularly nice views. Then, you will also have your own seating area with a table and benches. It can be good to know that if you are coming with a caravan, you have to park your car in the parking lot outside the campsite. There are also A+ pitches, that are very nice. These ones are perfect for those who want a 1st-row pitch for the water. Of course, Camp Hverringe also offers you various service buildings that house toilets, showers, laundry rooms, etc. I would particularly like to mention the outdoor kitchens – on a nice evening, this is a particularly good place to cook and enjoy the camping holidays.

The campsite also offers countless activities for the whole family, such as an indoor games room, a climbing wall, a cinema, and a billiards room. There are also several playgrounds, a beach volleyball field, football pitches, trampolines, bouncy cushions, table tennis tables, and much, much more… You definitely won’t get bored here. The whole family can also enjoy playing in the swimming pool or head to the beach. At the beach, you can rent SUPs, kayaks, or canoes or take hours-long walks on the beach. For people who love animals, the camp also has goats and ponies. As you are a true nature lover, I also recommend you to explore the forest or beach with a nature guide or marine biologist. You can get more information about this at reception, where you will meet the nice staff.

Excursion tips:

In Ladby, you can visit the Viking Museum. The main attraction of the museum is the Ladby Ship – the Viking ship grave. In 925, a Viking king was buried in his warship. In the museum, you can marvel at this and learn a lot about the history of the kings of that time and their lives. In summer, the museum organizes activities for the whole family. This makes for great opportunities to get creative in the clay, carving workshop, trying your hand at archery, or throwing Viking spears. In short, you can become a Viking for an afternoon! You can get more information at the website.
