Travel with a motorhome or caravan along Denmark’s North Sea coast, and we bet that you will not get enough of the breathtaking natural landscape. Before you go there yourself, it might, however, be difficult to imagine how beautiful this little country, which you can reach via Germany and Sweden, really is. After having spent just a few days on the Danish North Sea coast, with its dream beaches and enchanting sand dunes, it actually made my list of favorite camping destinations.
In this article, I will present some beautiful campsites for your holiday, along with the exciting excursion destinations that await you there.
Just off the Danish coast, in an area called the Wadden Sea, we find the small island of Rømø. It consists mainly of sand and is just under 16 kilometers long. The entire west coast of the island consists of a wide sandy beach, and just behind the first sand dune there is a fantastic campsite. The island, which is relatively close to the German border, belongs to South Jutland and you reach it by driving over a 9 kilometer long bridge. Additionally, the campsite at Rømø is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage List, which says a lot about what a wonderful trip awaits you here!

When you reach the island of Rømø, you are at the campsite within minutes. That’s how close it is, which can be especially appreciated if you’ve already traveled far. There, you can choose between many different pitches – directly on the dunes or further into the area, with or without electricity, regardless of whether you come with a motorhome, caravan, or tent. If you come by car, you can also book one of the 11 cottages for a comfortable stay. There are a total of 3 service houses on the campsite, which have good WC facilities, cooking areas, and washing machines. In the entrance area, there is also a supermarket, several kiosks, restaurants, cafes, and shops.
A highlight of the campsite is the adjacent sandy beach, which also is accessible by car, as you can see in the picture below. Events often take place here, such as kite festivals, surfing competitions, and beach buggy races. In other words, at Lakolk Strand, you won’t get bored. You can do everything from taking relaxing strolls in the dunes and having a picnic to playing beach volleyball and watching everything that’s going on. There really is always something to see!
The island is a real favorite for birds, as the Wadden Sea offers ideal conditions for them when it comes to food. In addition, up to 15 million migratory birds pass through from October to April to strengthen themselves for the long journey down to the continent. From Rømø dam, there are also great opportunities to spot the birds, thanks to fine lookouts for bird watching. You can also get a lot of exciting information about the Wadden Sea at Tønnisgård nature center, while engaging in participating in workshops, visiting the Wadden Sea exhibition, and going on mud sea walks with experienced guides.
With so many nice campsites to choose from along Denmark’s North Sea coast, the only thing missing is a motorhome or caravan that suits you perfectly, right? We got your back, as you can book your motorhome or caravan directly with us!
Hvide Sande is part of a narrow stretch of land that separates the North Sea from Ringkøbing Fjord, and here, you are greeted by a dreamlike sandy landscape. About halfway along the route, you’ll arrive at the harbor town of Hvide Sande, which is perfect for your camping holiday by the North Sea. The campsite Dancamps Nordsø is idyllically nestled between sand dunes and you can easily reach the sea by foot.

At Dancamps Nordsø, that dream can become true. Furthermore, WC facilities and drains as well as freshwater connections, plus washing machines, and cooking facilities give you the necessary comfort. You’ll also find a bakery and café in the reception building, as well as a large indoor pool if a rainy day is imminent.
You can park your motorhome or caravan on one of the pitches, all of which are equipped with an electrical connection. You can also choose to stay in one of the cozy cabins on the campsite. On the western side of the 12-hectare site, a narrow path leads you over the dunes directly to the beautiful, golden beach. If you feel like it, you can stroll along the beach for hours watching the waves. If you are looking for a sporty adventure, you can reach the Westwind surf school 4 kilometers north of the campsite. Here you can take lessons in windsurfing, kitesurfing, SUP, or kayaking and experience the sea from a completely new perspective.
Near the campsite, you’ll find the most popular attraction in the area, Lyngvig Lighthouse. You can easily park your motorhome or caravan in the car park and spend a few lovely hours on the dunes around the lighthouse. Lyngvig Lighthouse stands on a 17-meter-high dune and is 38 meters high. Sounds majestic, right? It was built in 1906 as a signal light for ships and from the top, you have a fantastic view of the Spit, the North Sea, and Ringkøbing Fjord.
Located directly at the Limfjord, the next stop on your Denmark trip along the North Sea awaits (alternatively, this is a destination that can be a destination on its own). If you drive east from the coast, what looks like a serpentine road takes you down to the port of Lemvig. From there, you have a fantastic view of the fjord and the many sailboats. The city of Lemvig is an ideal place for a relaxed and at the same time varied holiday.

In addition, you will find idyllic parks around Lake Lemvig, a cinema, an art museum, and the beautiful harbor that invites you to linger and stroll. Additionally, street food trucks often open their doors directly on the harbor promenade with unique and super-delicious delicacies.
A fantastic excursion awaits you about half an hour’s drive from the campsite. On the 8 km long, narrow Bøvling dune at Nissum Fjord, you will practically always find roadside parking spaces. You can also stay in a super chic glamping tent with a nice bed and own terrace, alternatively in a cute little hut or in comfortable cabins for 2 to 6 people. There are also toilets, a small grocery store, a shared kitchen, and two outdoor kitchens as well as a sauna for the cooler holidays in the camping area.
Now back to water sports! Since the campsite is right next to the main Danish surf spot in the North Sea town of Klitmøller, there are great opportunities for surfing. The beach is also called “Cold Hawaii” as Pacific-like waves roll onto the beach. You might happen to be here when one of the surfing competitions is taking place, such as the Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup featuring the world’s 32 best surfers. One thing that is certain is that your camping holiday on the North Sea coast will definitely not be boring if you decide to go to Nystrup Camping!
Covering an area of 24,370 hectares, the incredibly beautiful Thy National Park is located on the west coast of Jutland and was officially opened in 2008. The landscape is characterized by endless beaches, sand dunes, meadows, forests, and as much as over 200 lakes. There is a large population of red deer and a great sanctuary for cranes, sea eagles, and many other birds. At Nors Sø and Vandet Sø, there are parking lots for those who want to hike and great places to watch animals. By the way, due to the lack of artificial light sources, a unique landscape with a sky full of shining stars awaits you at night.
Traveling along the Danish North Sea means always spending your holiday close to nature. One postcard motif follows another and you will find room for a nice coffee break in the middle of nature everywhere you go. Løkken Vestkystcamping is particularly suitable for nature lovers, not least because hares and pheasants pass by here in the morning to brighten your start to the day.

This lovely campsite is surrounded by green meadows, bushes, and hedges, so you can spend your holiday in the greenery. In addition, it only takes about 5 minutes by car to reach the center of Løkken. Here you will find supermarkets, cute shops, restaurants and cafes, the Løkken museum about the history of the area, and a large indoor leisure center for rainy days.
The highlight of Løkken, however, is the famous beach with its historic white bathhouses. There are almost 500 of them and they can only pass into another person’s possession through inheritance or a very long waiting list.
Since the 19th century, the cabins have been used as changing rooms or for having a small coffee with a view of the sea. It’s forbidden to spend the night or install sanitary facilities and power connections here. The municipality strictly controls whether the centuries-old bathhouse tradition is preserved! Even if you don’t get a chance to enter any of the cabins, it’s still a phenomenal photo opportunity!
A very impressive sight can be reached within about 10 minutes by car. Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse is not like your usual lighthouse, as it comes with an incredible story. Due to the strong North Sea wind, more and more sand has been washed away from the coast over the past 100 years and blown inland, to the point that in 2019, the lighthouse stood directly on the precipice and was in danger of falling into the sea. To prevent this, it was moved 80 meters further east during an extremely complex procedure, where it can be visited today. Doesn’t that sound exciting? It’s definitely worth a visit!
As you approach the northern tip of Denmark, you have the wonderful sea fully present. There is hardly a single road that is not near, or is, a beach. Here, Denmark is bordered by both the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, and the mainland is now only about 9 kilometers wide. The landscape is characterized by sea, sandy beaches, and dunes – absolutely fantastic, in other words. Don’t miss the small town of Skiveren, which belongs to the municipality Ålbæk, where you can spend a fantastic camping holiday right by the North Sea.

A day at the beach is sometimes exactly what’s needed to re-energize and just have a good time. So, bring a beach towel and something to drink and head out, with wonderful Skiveren Camping as a starting point. On the north side of the campsite, there’s a 100 meter path that leads you through the idyllic dunes, and after just a few steps, you can see the turquoise sea. If you feel like something good to eat after a swim in the North Sea, StrandCaféen awaits you with hot dishes and a cozy outdoor terrace, a supermarket, and a barbecue area.
The North Sea coast at Skiveren Camping is characterized by a beautiful beach that stretches over a total length of almost 50 kilometers. Thus, nothing stands in the way between you and a long stroll on the beach. If you can’t find a quiet spot, you can just switch to another part of the beach. Many of the parts are even drivable, and if you make sure to avoid some of the trickier parts of the sand, it really is a super exciting experience. The well-known Tversted Strand, where you can try this adventure, is just 6 kilometers from Skiveren.
Very close to Skiveren, there is a spectacular excursion destination that you should not miss. Have you ever heard of a shifting sand dune? This natural phenomenon has formed between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea and can be visited at any time of the year. The migrating dune Råbjerg Mile covers an area of almost 120 hectares and moves 15 meters a year towards the Baltic coast. The dunes reach a height of up to 40 meters, so you can enjoy a sensational view of the surroundings up there. There is a visitor parking lot right by Råbjerg Mile Vej where you can park your motorhome or caravan. Smooth huh?
As you now understand, the point at which the North Sea meets the Baltic Sea, is a fantastic campsite at the top of northern Denmark, near Sweden. Here awaits a fantastic holiday resort and a perfect starting point for activities. Additionally, there is also always something going on with animals in the area, which will come back to in a moment. The natural terrain of the campsite is characterized by the coastal landscape, and additional hedges and plants ensure that you can enjoy your privacy. A highlight of the campsite is the pitches directly at the dunes.

You can walk to the center and the port of Skagen in about 15 minutes, which is a really big plus. The beautiful holiday resort offers many opportunities for walking, eating out, coffee, and also taking part in cultural experiences. How about a visit to Skagen’s art museum or the famous open-air museum? The lighthouse Det Grå Fyr can be reached on foot in about 10 minutes.
If you are this far north in Denmark, you should definitely visit the northernmost point. This is also located on the Grenen peninsula, so you only need to travel a short distance. The nature reserve is also the place where the North Sea meets the Baltic Sea with its characteristic waves. With a bit of luck, you will also meet the cute seals here, who often lie on the beach and enjoy the sun. If you want to rest your legs after a long walk on the beach, there’s the “Sandmasken” (meaning “Sandworm” – a small train that has been transporting visitors from the parking lot to the beach and back for over 50 years.
